Late night visitor...

late night visit...

Back in May I received an email from one of the organisers of the British Wildlife Photography awards letting me know that 2 of my images that I'd entered earlier in the year had been shortlisted in the first round of judging. Fantastic news and although I've had a few shortlists in other competitions over the last two years, it gives me a real sense of pride that my images have caught the eye enough to be considered.

If the shortlist email was a surprise, the email that arrived a couple of months later letting me know that I'd even luckier and been awarded 'Highly Commended' in the Hidden Britain category nearly gave me a heart attack! This is my first recognition in a major national competition, and is a very nice feeling indeed...

It's an image I really liked at the time, taken of a Netelia species ichneumon wasp that had visited the moth-trap one night. It's a stunning little insect and it was nice to catch it in reflection like this. When I started 'mothing' a few years back I didn't expect it to be one of the myriad other creatures that are attracted to the UV light that would give me the most pleasure!

This shot will appear alongside some esteemed company in the 6th BWPA book, which will be launched at the exhibition at the Mall Galleries on 16th September there are some truly stunning photos this year. I look forward to meeting a few photographers whose work has impressed and inspired me, and putting some faces to names. I was bought the first British Wildlife Photography Awards book 5 years ago as a birthday present, it's still not quite sunk in that I'll be in there this year.

See the winners and a few of the other Highly Commended shots on the BWPA website and order the book here.
